Catamount Community Radio - April 2 & April 9, 2017

Folks'Songs has been going well. We had two gigs this past week. The usual Friday night in Sylva at Guadalupe Cafe and then Saturday evening at Frog Level Brewing in Waynesville. When I first started with the group 10 weeks back or so, as a percussionist, I just tried to keep a steady beat, in the pocket; no frills. With time I'm developing some tricks. I also handle the between song banter, since I'm the one on the mic. Guitar is the major instrument in this part of the world, so some people are really into what Michael plays on the guitar ... He doesn't play the way most do - he can play bass lines and rhythm simultaneously and has a sophisticated harmonic knowledge. Meanwhile, the hippest listeners are grooving on what Tyler is playing on tenor sax because they recognize his improvisational genius and world-class playing. And there are even those who seem to enjoy my between song schtick, my Tom Waits-style "singing" and my percussion playing. Yes, but since I've been playing in a "professional" setting I'm getting a good taste of what it's like to be a working musician - dealing with patrons who come up to you during the break and want to talk to you: about their guitar playing, the music they're into, and who want to hip you to stuff and request tunes. They can be annoying, but you pretend to listen to them respectfully, because there is a tip jar, and swimming pools don't pay for themselves, and at least they came out to buy some drinks and listen. That's just how you do. But no, Jerry Rafferty's "Baker Street" is not in our book.

So last week, when I was too lazy to post, I played a good number of Country and Western tunes. This week it was back to the jazz and the etc. Next week, qui sait?
