Catamount Community Radio - November 1, 2015

Daylight Saving Time ... Even though I think the reason for which it was instated is probably no longer valid (to save electricity), and even though it's not going to be easy to get around to walking Roscoe before night falls, I did appreciate the extra hour of sleep. I was draggin' ass last night - couldn't even stay up to watch the World Serious - and I got nine hours of sleep. And I feel like a goddam million bucks today.

I really enjoy this tune by David Bowie, "Conversation Piece."

And the world is full of life
Full of folk who don't know me
And they walk in twos or threes or more
While the light that shines above the grocer's store
Investigates my face so rudely

And my essays lying scattered on the floor
Fulfill their needs just by being there
And my hands shake, my head hurts
My voice sticks inside my throat
I'm invisible and dumb and no one will recall me
And I can't see the water through the tears in my eyes

Not too shabby is also Dylan's "Workingman's Blues #2"

There's an evenin' haze settlin' over town
Starlight by the edge of the creek
The buyin' power of the proletariat's gone down
Money's gettin' shallow and weak
Well, the place I love best is a sweet memory
It's a new path that we trod
They say low wages are a reality
If we want to compete abroad
My cruel weapons have been put on the shelf
Come sit down on my knee
You are dearer to me than myself
As you yourself can see
While I'm listening to the steel rails hum
Got both eyes tight shut
Just sitting here trying to keep the hunger from
Creeping its way into my gut

We heard three different versions of the Cuban classic, "Bruca maniguá."

Well, last night was Halloween, so I did my usual "treat vs. trick" schtick. Signifier "trick or treat" vs. signified: "give me some candy." How dumfounded the little sociopath midgets would be if I said simply "trick." Didn't even buy any candy this year. We live on a busy road anyway, so I dim the lights and of course they don't show. Back in the day we used to trick or treat like mini outlaws, on our bikes all over town. Now it's all controlled. The difference is like adult-supervised sports vs. playing pick-up. Times change, and I become a curmudgeon.

So, I did a little goof today: After playing Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" I put on a novelty record of werewolf sounds, and then over the top, a spoken-word thing by Vincent Price. But not a scary thing, but rather his recipe for pickled mushrooms.
