Catamount Community Radio - August 9, 2015

This slice of pizza pie is so humongous that I'm not sure I can finish it all in one go.

The FB blurb I wrote last night: "Couture is out tomorrow; he needs his beauty sleep (he's one ugly character) and also to take advantage of the quiet morning hours to sharpen his chops on the tenor saxophone. But no worries, Dr. Markenstein will be filling in for him. Couture showed him the basics of board operation and loaned him his skeleton key to the station, so we're good to go. It's not like there are more than seven people listening anyway, so how bad could Markenstein mess it up, in the worst of all possible worlds, what with Markenstein's good intentions and a trunk full of jazz and funk... He'll do a groove thing (or so he says), and you'll be glad you did if indeed you did, or otherwise. 10 am -noon. at 90.5 on your FM dial and not streaming on the internet ..." here.

All modesty aside, I thought it was a pretty good show. We heard a couple from Nick Lowe, we listened to the original Ellington version of "Take the A Train" (which is what Ellington told Billy Strayhorn when directing him to his house in Harlem). Dipping into my bag of shtick, I announced it as the Canadian national anthem ("Take the train, eh"). We followed that up with the Delta Rhythm Boys' vocal version of the tune, (OK, Daddy-o).n We did some globe trotting (Brazil, Haiti, Mali), and listened two different tunes with the same title ("Doggin' Around"). Two from Roy Hargrove.

We listened to the Drifters sing "Fools in Love," precisely because the new school year is approaching and it contains the line "Oh, they're making plans for the future / When they should be right back in school."

Well, fools fall in love in a hurry
Fools give their hearts much too soon
Just play them two bars of "Stardust"
Just hang out one silly moon

Oh, and they've got their love torches burning
When they should be playing it cool
I used to laugh but now I understand
Shake the hand of a brand new fool
