Catamount Community Radio - July 5, 2015

Another week without internet stream, what can I do? I guess I could enquire as to what is going on; it's just that I sense that it wouldn't make a difference. I feel like that, since it is summer, and there are only two live shows on the air, neither of them student shows, getting the internet streaming is not a high priority.

Andy Griffith passed away, at least the internet said he did, so I paid tribute with a routine of his from way back about football. My professor and mentor recently wrote a book about the Andy Griffith Show, A Cuban in Mayberry.

I remember the first time I visited NYC, 30 years ago at least. We were swimming at Sandy Hook beach in New Jersey, just across the water from the southern tip of Manhattan. There was the Statue of Liberty, dwarfed by the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The jets were flying by constantly, approaching LaGuardia I'm imagining. I had a boom box full of batteries, playing Jr. Walker and the All-Stars. I recall cutting it off after a murderous glance and some menacing words from some locals. I was young and stupid. Now I'm old and ...

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings did Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land." I remember reading, maybe 30 years back, Guthrie's memoir, Bound for Glory. I haven't reread it since then, but at the time it struck me as better than Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath. Two books about the dust bowl and heading to California. Maybe Woody's has the advantage of being non-fiction and of detailing life on the rails hoboing in the thirties as well as the exodus to Cali.
