Catamount Community Radio - March 22, 2015

I briefly entertained the notion of making today the spring-themed show, with "Spring Can Really Hang You up the Most" and et cetera, but, thinking of Jim Dandy up there in Maine with all that snow, and Nick and Gaby's dog up there in New York frolicking in the snow in Central Park, I thought maybe it's premature. Jim had a nice line in his cover contest entry: "it snowed all day yesterday, but it's that fluffy stuff that gives the wind something to play with." Here it's all daffodils and young love. I think I'll do the spring-themed show next week, even if Dandy's picnic table is still covered with the white stuff.

I played Chico Hamilton's "Big News from Winnetka." Winnetka is actually next to Chicago, but the name always makes me think of Wapakoneta, OH, where I always stop to spend the night every time I'm rolling down I-75 between North Carolina and Michigan. By the way, it's the home of Neil Armstrong, the first man to play golf on the moon.

Frank Sinatra sang one with Count Basie and the band, I recounted this story:

Brad Mehldau and Joel Fraham played Sonny Rollins' "Oleo." Brad Mildew, as Dandy calls him and Joel "Soul" Fraham. I quipped, "Oleo is OK, but butter is better, and lard is the best."

Speaking of Rollins, we heard him blow that old chestnut, "Toot Toot Tootsie, Goodbye." I love the way he can modulate between keys effortlessly ... that's what good jazz musicians can do.

Katie Lee has the will to fail:

I rarely if ever hold a job
I never finish my work
I'm an affable kind of a slob
a highly disorganized placid sort of a jerk

I've got the will to fail
the will to fail
I have talents that I never use
I try to win but I love to lose
because I've got the will to fail

Nico and Gaby win the cover contest this week. They could hardly have gotten a higher score.
