Catamount Community Radio - December 21, 2014

My garbage can is full of chicken bones and the shells of crustaceans who were sacrificed for my pleasure and sustenance, so you can imagine what my belly is full of.

My current bicycle is the first I've ever owned with disc brakes rather than caliper brakes. I have a hard time adjusting them. I get them nice and tight and the next thing I know they don't work at all. On the way in today I was braking like Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble.

The first hour of the show today was basically Sherwin Sleeves reading "The Christmas Skater.". I hope the listeners liked it.

I played a couple of numbers from D'Angelo's new album, The Black Messiah, which shares a title with a record Cannonball Adderley put out back in the day. Although critical acclaim is almost universal, Nicholas Payton dissented, saying, more or less, don't believe the hype. I think what really bothers him, though, has less to do with the album itself than with the fact that it took D'Angelo almost 15 years to make it. I like it, especially the interplay of horns and guitars, and even though the lyrics are almost unintelligible, and probably not transcendent anyway. Well, maybe they are ... I haven't listened to the whole album through yet.

Jim Dandy edges out Nick and Gaby to win the cover contest for the fourth straight time. Only two questions today.

1. Who's tune is German saxophonist Heinz Sauer covering? - Prince's ("Nothing Compares 2 U")

2. Who wrote the tune, and who is singing it? "Blackbird," written by Paul McCartney and interpreted by Cassandra Wilson.

Catamount Community radio airs Sunday mornings 10-12 (Eastern Coastal) on WWCU-FM...... Although most likely not on the air next week. I will probably be on my annual Michigan voyage with Roscoe and the Issue.
