Catamount Community Radio - August 10, 2014

There's an old hippy riding his "ten speed" (that's what we called that type of bike back in the day) through the parking lot. One day I saw him going down the sidewalk on a riding mower. Who does he think he is, George Jones?

You know the fall semester is hovering just around the corner when you start hearing the percussion sections of the marching band practicing their rigid rhythms. They've started. By the time I do my show next Sunday, the kids will have arrived and there will be classes to teach the next morning. I can't complain about the summer slipping by without getting any work done, because I got work done, but I do wish I had tried a little harder to have fun.

Played four different versions of "Everything Happens to Me."

I make a date for golf
you can bet your life it rains.
I try to throw a party
and the guy upstairs complains.
I guess I'll go through life
just catching colds and missing trains.
Everything happens to me.

A quick glance at the playlist shows a moon theme. Many a moon tune. "Fly me to the moon," "Polka dots and moonbeams," "I't only a Paper Moon." It's super moon tonight. I think the moon acts upon us in strange way. The last super moon, I was in an automobile accident. I think I'll refrain from driving today.

Mary Ellen wins the cover contest.

1. What tune is Ben Webster covering with that airy, vibrato-rich tone of his and string backing? Hint: Elvis Presley did this tune. - Blue Moon

2. Who is the singer covering Van Morrison's "Moondance" - Bobby McFerrin

3. What's the name of the tune Wynton is covering? - "Big Butter and Egg Man." I play Mary Ann McCall singing this tune every once in awhile, so I figured that would be the only way anybody participating today would recognize it. "I want / a big butter and egg man / from way out in the west ... etc."

4. What's the name of the tune, and who is the guitarist covering it? - "Turn, Turn, Turn" / Bill Frisell.

I said that this was not a trick question, because usually when it's time to identify a guitarist it's Frizzle. Then I remembered that Edgar Poe story, "The Purloined Letter"... If he says it's not a trick question, it must be a trick question, but if he thinks that I think it will be a trick question if he says it's not one, then it might not be a trick question, etc.

I'm on the radio Sunday mornings 10-12 (East Coast) on WWCU-FM.

Curses, Frizzed Again!

AND...I almost "guessed" Bobby McFerrin. The band through me off.
So, Bill Frizzle was in the Byrds? hmmm. I was so sure one of my trick answers would be right. Still, a splendid time was had, y'all!

Re: Curses, Frizzed Again!

No, he was covering the Byrds. There is a new album coming out, and this is the only track that has been released. I have two questions ready for next week, neither of which has anything to do with the Frizzle. Humidly yours, Marco.
