Catamount Community Radio - May 18, 2014

The last few days have been cool, gray, with awesome 5-minute rain storms. I'm enjoying it while it lasts, because I fear that soon it will once again be in the mid eighties, or higher. While I don't care that much about weather, I'm not crazy about working up a sweat when I take the garbage out.

I did a color theme. The title of every song had a color name in it. I spanned the whole spectrum, with an understandable focus on the blues and the greens. I hit all the major colors: along with red, blue and yellow there was black, brown, white, orange, purple, and pink. And I even hit with chartreuse, lavender and indigo.

The spectrum of colors visible to crows is greater than that which can see. So a crow looking black to us doesn't look black to a crow. Imagine 50 shades of black. Seriously, I'm not really a big color guy. I'm more into sound than sight, but I had fun with it today.

Even the cover contest was a color contest.

1. What's the title of the tune, and whose is it that King Curtis is covering? - "Green Onions" by Booker T and the MGs. JD 2, MER nil.

2. Fontella Bass sang "Brown Eyed Handsome Man." Who wrote it? - Chuck Berry. JD 2, MER 1

3. This jazz standard, covered by Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott, shares a name with a famously loud rock band. - "Deep Purple." JD 3, MER 2.

4. What's the name of the tune that Clifford Jordan is playing, and whose tune is it? - "Black Betty" by Lead Belly (Huddie William Ledbetter). I remember first hearing this song as cover at Stewart Foster's House, done by a band called Ram Jam. Final score: JD 3, MER 2. No penalty kicks needed.
