Catamount Community Radio - April 20, 2014

Today is a beautiful Easter Sunday, but yesterday was a rainy Saturday. I took Roscoe to the park and we had the whole damn thing to ourselves. We played frisbee till sated. The only problem is that Roscoe (aka the Wizard Kid) was soaked by the end of it. That's alright, his coat is made of Teflon, and he never stinks. I'm sure if we go to the park today it will be teeming with children and pets, and their adult handlers.

Prepping the show yesterday, I burned one playlist twice, and didn't burn one. That meant that my promises of the Duke of Ellington and Marisa Monte were not honored today. But everything else, including the cover contest, went according to plan.

I played a couple by Larry Goldings. I just learned a couple of weeks ago that it was Goldings who was behind the Hans Groiner character. I had been hippity hop to Groiner for years, but never made the connection.

Played a few by Nick Lowe.

Sonny Rollins did Cole Porter's "Every Time We Say Goodbye." Had the lyrics in my head:

Every time we say goodbye,
I die a little.
Every time we say goodbye,
I wonder why a little.
Why the gods above me, who must be in the know,
think so little of me they allow you to go.
When you're near there's such an air of spring about it.
I can hear a lark somewhere begin to sing about it.
There's no love song finer
but how strange the change from major to minor,
Every time we say goodbye,
every single time we say goodbye.

It really does change from major to minor... Let's see, played Hosono's "Good Morning, Mr. Echo," the very version that you can see here:

Jim Dandy retains the "King of the Cover Contest title, beating Mary Ellen this week.

1. What is the name of the tune, done by The Doctors in reggae style? - "In the Summertime." Originally a hit for Mungo Jerry in 1970.

2. What is the name of the tune that Thomas "Fats" Waller is playing? - "I Ain't Got Nobody." I kinda thought would get because I'm sure he is familiar with David Lee Roth's "Just a Gigolo," which morphs into "I Ain't Got Nobody at the end.

3. Who is covering the Beatles' (George Harrison's) "Here Comes the Sun"? - Peter Tosh.

4. Olivia Newton John sings "If Not for You." Whose tune is it? - Bob Dylan's

I couldn't help but tease champion Jim Dandy, who last week missed a question on "Goin' Out of my Head." So I played a snippet of La Lupe's version of the tune.
