Catamount Community Radio - March 30, 2014

Riding my bike back down to my office after the show, I noticed a stairway leading nowhere. If I get too stuck today in whatever it is I'm pursuing, I'm gonna ride up there and take a picture of it. Light is good today.

I have so much work to do I hardly know were to start. Actually, when that's the case, it doesn't matter where you start; the thing of it is simply to start. But I have the procrastination gene, which unfortunately I've passed on to my daughter. Let's see if anything new and interesting has happened on the world wide web since I last checked two minutes ago. Nope.

I had a little "I want" theme going today. Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson swinging like mad on "I Want to be Happy," Louis Armstrong singing "I Want a Little Girl." He pronounces girl, "goil." Lake Street Drive covered "I Want You Back," and Eartha Kitt did "I want to be Evil.

Regina Carter and Christian McBride did their unique take on Bach, starting straight and then jazzifying it. Word is out that Harry Connick, Jr. has eleven fingers.

I rode a roller coaster
From Coney Island to Key West
I held on with one finger
So the other ten could rest
It may be hard to believe
Hard to comprehend
But baby, you didn't know me when

Pearl Bailey and Frank Sinatra had the banter going strong on "A little learning is a dangerous thing."

I played a little bit of Prince's "Lady Cab Driver." If I had some time and some gumption I'd write out an arrangement of that for three horns. I'm gonna do it one day, but it will probably be later rather than sooner.

"It's All in the Game" was a hit for Tommy Edwards in 1958. Although the lyrics were written in 1951 by Carl Sigman, the melody was written way back in 1911 by Charles Dawes, who later became vice-president of the United States under Calvin Coolidge. Afterwards we listened to Keith Jarrett play the number on the piano.

Jim Dandy got a perfect score on the cover contest.

1. Name one of the two singers dueting on Hoagy Carmichael's "Two Sleepy People." - Carmen McRae and Sammy Davis, Jr.

2. Which under-appreciated rock singer is covering Prince's "When U Were Mine"? - Mitch Ryder

3. Who is covering the Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing"? - The Jackson 5

4. Whom is Maceo Parker covering with "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold"? - His Purpleness himself - the artist formerly known as the artist formerly known as Prince.
