Catamount Community Radio - September 22, 2013

Yesterday it rained all day until around 5:00. And then after that the skies continued to be overcast and gray. I love that kind of weather, every once in awhile. I took Roscoe to the park, and we had the whole damn thing to ourselves. When I was taking him out one last time around eleven PM the skies were beautiful, you had the sense that it was going to be a gorgeous day the next day. I forget that I have a camera. That's the reason I have a camera, just for moments like that. Today, there is not a cloud in the sky, but it's not hot. I'll have to get out on the bike today. But enough about the weather.

I wonder if the word "ass" is OK for radio here in the southland. Yesterday I was listening to "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" and Carl Kasell said it, and it was broadcast on WCQS, Asheville. So maybe I'll go with it next week. Kool Keith has a tune called "Gorilla Driving a Pickup Truck" with the line "He's on my ass." I think the FCC rule is that the language can't violate community standards, so what's OK in New York might not fly in the Bible Belt. Some words you can't use anywhere, and George Carlin and you know which ones. But I find it weird that people still get uptight and insist on censoring words, especially considering all the shit that going down on this planet.

While "Feelin' Groovy" was playing, I saw the clock read "11:11:11." If I were superstitious, I would say that was lucky. And yesterday, I watched the odometer on my Subaru go from 209999 to 210000. I always like to catch those sort of things. On long trips I used to always look for patterns on the odometer. Don't I don't do it so much anymore, because I don't tend to be alone anymore, although I might as well be, because often the Issue and the Spousal Unit are absorbed in their phones and the mother-in-law is asleep. Speaking of phones, I'm eligible for an upgrade, but I might just pass. Just what I need: more distractions.

It looks like Dandy wins the cover contest today. Mary Ellen didn't play, but Susan did. A new contestant! Yay. I'm taking over the world, one listener at a time.

1. Who is pianist Cyrus Chestnut covering? Elvis, "Suspicious Minds." When I was in New York last time, I heard him play. He made a dude sitting our table cry.

2. Which Motown star is Don Byron covering? Jr. Walker and the All-Stars.

3. What is this tune, and who is the smooth saxophonist who is covering it? - "59th St. Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" by Simon and Garfunkel, played by Paul Desmond, who was a member of Dave Brubeck's band. Despite his name, there's not much funk in Garfunkel.

4. Who is Bill Frizzle (Frisell) covering? - Hank Williams' "I Can't Help it (if I'm Still in Love with You)."

It looks like you win, MER, but I'm going to penalize you a point for lateness, so that way you and Jim tie. Susan got one.
