Catamount Community Radio - August 25, 2013

Is summer still alive or has it died? I can't figure it out. On the one hand, I've been back teaching school for a week and there is football on TV; on the other hand, it's 80 degrees every day and the grass is cooing: "mow me, mow me." Oh, and I have 97 faces and 97 names to remember to match them.

I like to mix up the instrumentals with songs with lyrics. So after a couple jazz numbers to start the show, two from Nick Lowe. First "I Trained Her to Love Me":

Do you see the way she lights up when I walk in the room? That's good.
And the skip in her step when we're both out walkin' in the neighborhood?
This one's almost done, now to watch her fall apart.
I trained her to love me so I can go ahead and break her heart.

If you think that it's depraved and I should be ashamed, so what?
I'm only paying back womankind for all the grief I got
I've got the latest believin' forever I'll be true
I trained her to love me, now excuse me, I've got work to do.

That's not nice, Nick. Maybe "Hope for Us All" has a little more positive message.

I must admit there were times
when all I ever did was climb the walls
but if even I, a feckless man,
who's thrown away every single chance he's ever had
can find someone to check his fall
there must be hope for us all.
If even I can find someone
there's hope for us all.

That's better.

We heard Blossom Dearie sing "I Won't Dance," a tune that references a dance called the Continental. Later we heard Fred Astaire sing "The Continental." So let's look at a video of Fred Astaire doing "I won't Dance," in which he dances, but without Ginger Rogers.

Mary Ellen cleans up on the cover contest, wrestling the title away from Sir Jim Dandy.

1. Who is the author of these two songs, and, for extra credit, who is performing them? They were both written by Leonard Cohen, the brooding Canadian.

a) Madeleine Peyroux - "Dance Me to the End of Love"
b) Nina Simone - "Suzanne"

2. What mustachioed rock / classical musician composed this tune, and what's it called?

a) Frank Zappa
b) Zoot Allures

We heard a version performed by Ensemble Ambrosius. Here's what Frank had to say about the pervasive love song:

“I think one of the causes of bad mental health in the United States is that people have been raised on love lyrics. You're a young kid and you hear all those love lyrics, right? Your parents aren't telling you the truth about love, and you can't really learn about it in school. You're getting the bulk of your behavior norms mapped out for you in the lyrics to some dumb love song."

That's right, Frank, we need some dirty love. Don't tell me you don't know about that tacky little pamphlet in your daddy's bottom drawer.

3. Who wrote the tune and who is covering it?

a) Joni Mitchell wrote "Edith and the Kingpin."
b) it is being sung by Tina Turner in a guest role on Herbie Hancock's grammy-winning album, "The Joni Letters."

4. What are the tunes being mashed up by Chrissy Hynde and Jason Mraz in this number from the "Crazy Feet" soundtrack?

a) Steve Miller Band - "The Joker"
b) Bread - "Everything I Own"

Thanks to Mary Ellen for being there to catch the trophy when I dropped it!
Great show, Sir Marco!

Re: Bwaaaaaa!

It was a close, and you done good, son. But she nailed everything on questions 1,2,3. Hard to beat that. Got a modest prize for you next time you win. Plus your comments are golden.
