Catamount Community Radio - August 4, 2013

Have you ever been listening to the internet stream of a radio show when all of a sudden you get a message that says "rebuffering stream"? You're listening along, everything is dandy, and suddenly the sound is gone, and there's the obnoxious little message on the screen. Poor Jim Zappa, the problems he had today with streams rebuffering! I'm not sure how much hair he has left on his head, after all he was pulling out this morning. In his email, he said his neighbors probably thought he was having a revival or something for the number of times he shouted "Jesus!"

Mary Ellen wins the cover contest for the second week in a row with six points out of seven. Jim Sinatra in second place, but the poor fellow missed one of the questions because of a rebuffering stream.

1. We heard two covers of the same tune. Who are first Pee Wee Ellis and afterwards Marcus Miller covering, and what's the name of the tune? "Boogie on Reggae Woman" by Stevie Wonder.

Pee Wee Ellis, a formidable jazz musician in his own right, was once musical director for James Brown, and more recently for Van Morrison. His most famous composition is called "The Chicken," which was a hit for Jaco Pastorious.

2. What is the name of the tune and whose tune is being covered by Kathryn Williams? "Birds," by Neil Young. My hint was that it's not by Crosby, Stills or Nash.

3. What's the title and who wrote it? "What the World Needs now is Love," by Burt Bacharach Attack. Does he drive a Pontiac or a Cadillac? Extra credit question: who is playing it? Bill Frisell.

4. An easy one: Who are Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon covering with "Sweet Emotion"? - Aerosmith.

Jim has a good idea for a theme: a "frank" show. It would probably revolve around the two Franks best represented in my iTunes library: Sinatra and Zappa. I'll keep this in mind. Sinatra sang "Young at Heart":

If you should survive to one hundred and five
look at all you'll derive from being alive.

I quipped that my friend Jim Dandy is young at heart ... In fact he's got the heart of a child. He keeps it in a jar on his desk. Thanks for the line, Jim.

No show next Sunday. But I'll see you on the 18th. That will be the day before classes start. By that time, the air will be filled with the sounds of the marching band practicing, the students will be back and Cullowhee will be transformed. Part of me looks forward to the new semester; part of me regrets the passing of the lazy, crazy daze of summer.

Catamount Community goes out over the airwaves at 90.5 on your FM dial Sunday mornings 10-12 (right coast time) and, when the stream is not rebuffering, can be heard on the world wide web.

Well all I can say is that, sucking the internet off the neighbors wireless is sucking the life out of me! I am actually sitting in a lawn chair in the edge of the neighbors yard now, (swatting skeeters) as it was the only way I could make a connection for this comment. I will find a solution to this soon. The options for internet are limited in this neck of the woods unless you sign on for all the extras that I don't want or need. See you in 2 weeks. Maybe I will not be sucking then. cheers!

Hello, Hooray!
I ordered me some of that interweb for my house. I thought they would make me get a phone or TV channels or some other package thingy but they didn't. Interwebs only! And they're sending their finest technician right over with my new wood burning modem. He's coming by mule so he won't get here til the 14th but that is in plenty of time before your next show, bro. Now that that's done, all I need is snow tires and I'll be ready for winter! MmmHops!

Yeah I got me one now! A Webconnection of Mass Distraction!
