Catamount Community Radio - April 14, 2013

I'm using the annotated list format today. Catamount Community Radio, Sunday mornings, 10-12 (ET) on WWCU-FM.

1. David Murray – Dedication

His tone is fat, like cheese.

2. Duke Ellington – Jubilesta

When Cootie starts growling it kills me.

3. Nick Lowe – I Read a Lot

Not just magazines, but other, more serious, things ... You'll find me in a world of fantasy, population one. That's me.

4. Larry Goldings – (I’m Your) Jellyman

5. Ella Fitzgerald – Solitude

Two minutes and eight seconds of pure beauty.

6. Cyrus Chesnut – Indigo Blue

7. Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass – A Taste of Honey

The song that got me interested in music. And I won't even mention the album cover. My mom's record player was a big wooden box atop four spindly metal legs.

8. Willie Nelson – Crazy

My favorite Willie Nelson song.

9. Sketch Show – Turn Down Day

10. Raymond Scott – Twilight in Turkey (band)

The quintette played tight arrangements of Scott's whimsical tunes, with very little improvisation.

11. Raymond Scott – Twilight in Turkey (electronic)

In the fifties he became an electronic music pioneer.

12. Larry Goldings & Joshua Redman – That’s Enough

13. Dizzy Gillespie – Manteca

Chano Pozo got co-composer credit for this one. He couldn't read music, so he sang out the parts.

14. Don Cherry & Multikulti – Pettiford Bridge

15. Dinah Washington & Brook Benton – A Rockin’ Good Way (to Mess Around and Fall in Love)

- You're in my spot again.
- I like your spot.

16. The Meters – Cissy Strut

17. Louis Armstrong – Maybe It’s Because

18. Eric Dolphy – First Bass Line

19. Paquito D’Rivera – Tico Tico

There's so much energy in this tune that it tires you out.

20. The Futuristic Ensemble – Davenport Blues

I remember sofas being called "davenports" when I was a kid.

21. Kaki King – Carmine Street

She has an innovative guitar technique, incorporating percussive taps.

22. Cassandra Wilson & Terence Blanchard – On the Sunny Side of the Street

23. Accordéon Mélancolique – Petite fleur

Catamount Community Radio, your source for accordion.

24. Bill Charlap – Big Stuff

25. Glen Campbell – These Days

I wonder if Gregg Allman wrote this tune. The first version I heard was by Gregg Allman, but I like Glen Campbell's version better.

26. Larry Goldings & Harry Allen – The Look of Love

27. James Brown – Mother Popcorn, Pt. 2

I think Brown would record these long jams and then release them on side one and two of a 45. The good thing about the part twos is that they often have Maceo Parker solos.

28. Cyrus Chesnut – Suspicious Minds

29. Eartha Kitt – C’est si bon

In good French.

30. Jelly Roll Morton – Freakish

31. Kaki King – Carmine Street
