Catamount Community Radio - February 3, 2013

It snowed yesterday and this morning, a blanket of white that is now burning away. Yesterday on the quad the students were full of glee as they pelted each other with snowballs and built snow people. You walk by and in the midst of such howling happiness how can you continue being a sad sack? Like it or don't, it will lift your spirits, provided you don't get pelted. My walk in today was snowy and quiet. I like that. I put the boom box that I use to cassette record the show in a garbage bag so that it wouldn't get wet from the big fat snowflakes that were falling.

Happy? Once in a while. Claude Thornhill, with "I Want to be Happy," with (I'm assuming) Lee Konitz on alto, though it sounds like Charlie Parker. Marvin Pontiac, with "Now I'm Happy." Killer horn chart by Steven Bernstein. "I have a hamburger in me! ... Doop Doop doobie doop."

Two versions of "Tiger Rag," the first from 1922 by the Friars Society orchestra, and the second from 2011 by the 3 Cohens. Both versions excellent in their own way.

A little Ohio Players to pay tribute to the late Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner, leader of the Dayton-based funksters.

Anita O'Day, with "The Man with a Horn":

You'll always find me near the man with the horn
find me there from dark until dawn
that's the place where the music is born

Just listen while he takes his solo apart
watch him close his eyes from the start
hear that music pour from his heart
so fine.

Speaking of men with horns, I sat in with Tyler on Friday night up in Glenville and, through sheer enthusiasm, played slightly beyond my ability!

We heard some open-tuned guitar from Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake. Melancholy stuff.

I have gone sledding everyday starting Saturday till today. The snow should make us happy for all the right reasons of being young again and then being an adult and enjoying the peacefulness of it all.

That's right, MER

Every year Iz and I go sledding in Michigan. I forget how much fun it is
