Thanksgiving Community Radio - November 18, 2012

The weather has been glorious, gorgeous, lovely, and wonderful. But a man could use a cold rainy day now and again! You know my theory: beautiful weather almost obligates you to be out there, frolicking in the sunshine. But on a cold, gray day you can enjoy the great indoors guilt free, on the couch with your novel, or sitting on the floor playing records. I guess I'll just have to put up with this perfect autumn weather.

Thanksgiving, probably my favorite holiday, will be here this Thursday. I like Christmas, for the time off the work, the chance to go to Michigan and enjoy the snow, but the consumerist frenzy is a little much. Halloween has potential. I used to enjoy getting dressed up like Groucho, and trotting out his jokes... "I could dance with you until the cows come home .... or I could dance with the cows until you come home!" Even so, it's not as good as Thanksgiving, even though I typically I do not fall asleep on the couch with the Lions on the television after too much turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy. The fact of the matter is that I've got plenty to be thankful for, and not just for my good looks and charm.

I haven't got a great big yacht
to sail from shore to shore.
No carpet on my floor.
Still, I've got plenty to be thankful for.
I've got eyes to see with,
ears to hear with,
arms to hug with, lips to kiss with,
Someone to adore.

Every year around this time, I play Howard Nemerov reading his poem, "Thanksgrieving"

"Infant mortality didn't, as they say, claim me, though it damn near did. So I grew what they call 'up.' To the childhood illnesses routine for those times I added only paratyphoid on my own. I was never starved nor did my parents whip me or leave me chained to the bed. Nor did I get born a Jew in Germany. Plus, I went to their war and didn't die of it. Leaving aside my adventures among the dentists (your teeth are fine but those gums have got to go), my skirmishes with medicine include but a couple of major operations and a few discomfortable bothers with skeleton and strings. I have so far stayed out of asylums and jails and given the smawth and fewth of my abilities, have been lucky in being steadily employed. I'm still with the same dame, have three sons; have lost to death up to this day only a few family and five good friends. So help me, life, I may still make it to the end."

I don't know where the line breaks are, because I transcribed it from a recording. In the background, as he recited, I had Bartok running, some Hungarian folksongs.

William DeVaughan:

Though you may not drive
A great big Cadillac
Gangster whitewalls
TV antennas in the back

You may not have a car at all
But remember, brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall

Just be thankful
For what you've got
