Catamount Community Radio - November 3, 2019

My understanding is that Daylight Saving Time ends today, when we “fall back.” If you’re an optimist, or a sleep-deprived college student, you have an extra hour to sleep. Today, November 3, will be a 25-hour day, but not to worry, they’ll unceremoniously seize that hour back from us in the spring. When I was younger, and liked to go out at night to drink and dance, this “extra hour” seemed like some sort of bonus. But here’s the rub: the listeners of Catamount Community Radio are the type of people who used to go out partying back in the day, but don’t so often anymore. Now, they go to bed at like 10:30 P.M. and are up and about by 6:30 in the morning. So, while at first glance it seems like a good thing (an extra hour to sleep, yeah!), what it really means is that my people are going to wake up at 5:30 rather than 6:30 … and that they’ll have to wait an extra hour for the magic to begin at 10:00. What this is all about, only Alfie knows. For all I know, the muscatel might be gone by the time the tires screech and we embark on this week’s adventure.

We’ll have a special cover contest today: all Cole Porter, probably ten songs in all. Born in Peru, Indiana, to a fairly well-to-do family, he studied at Yale, where he majored in extra-curricular activities. Although gay, he married a woman even richer than he was. Oh, the life of the smart set in the twenties and thirties in Paris, Venice and other exotic locales! He had engraved on his cigarette lighters, “Stolen from Cole Porter.” A paragon of the American show tune, his songs are known for their nonchalant sophistication. They're love songs, but in most cases, unromantic ones. While blatantly hedonistic on one side, there is also a tender side to Porter’s songwriting (although, granted, both euphoria and heartache tend to be understated in his work). Poetry has long since become intellectualized, encroaching at times on the realm of philosophy. Porter’s lyrics are catchy and clever but, as Ira Gershwin put it, “any resemblance to actual poetry, living or dead, is highly improbable.”
