Catamount Community Radio - October 7, 2012

So, guess who forgot his headphones this morning? No matter, I just watched the meters as I talked to make sure everything was alright. I'll listen to the tape of the show this evening and see how it was.

When George Carlin did radio, he took pride in running the board smoothly. To an extent, I do as well, but I'm far from perfect at "board op." I think I did have a perfect day today, though: no pregnant pauses, no skipping CDs, no "senior moments," pondering the name of an entertainer or musician. Just smoothly flowing free-form radio, baby.

Up at JJs on Friday evening, Tyler played "Rose Room," giving me an idea for today's show. Ken Burns used the tune as the theme of his big documentary on jazz. If I recall correctly, it was Benny Goodman's theme, and that was the version he used. But all the big bands played it. We listened to Jimmie Lunceford's version, then later in the show, we heard Nat Cole play it on the piano. People probably mainly think if him as a singer, but could really swing the 88s.

Several covers today: CCR doing a cool, big band version of "Whole Lotta Love;" Bond, Joyce Bond, doing a reggae version of "Help Me make It Through the Night;" Roberta Flack, with the Beatles' "If I Fell;"

Joshua Redman did Stevie Wonder's "Visions;" Nicholas Payton played the Stylistics' "People Make the World Go Round" and .... as if all this were not enough, William Shatner and Bootsy Collins did "She Blinded Me with Science," just for the funk of it. I really need to get that cover contest rolling again.
