Catamount Community Radio - September 30, 2012

The screeching tires were appropriate this morning ... I didn't even have time to ride the bicycle in ... I had to come in automobilistically. I rolled in at like 9:57, and got started on today's jazz-heavy show. It was heavy, dig?

Dr. Lonnie Smith covered the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams." It would have been a good one for the old cover contest. I'm going to have to dust that off and reintroduce it. Just for fun, even if nobody plays.

I spun Dinah Washington doing "I Sold my Heart to the Junkman." I must confess that I probably like the tune as much for the title as for any other reason. They don't write them like that anymore.

I gave my heart to you, the one that I trusted
You brought it back to me all broken and busted.
So I sold my heart to the junkman
And I'll never fall in love again.

Speaking of tunes the likes of which are no longer written, "Too Marvelous for Words."

You're just too marvelous,
Too marvelous for words
Like glorious, glamorous
And that old standby, amorous.

It's all too wonderful
I'll never find the words
That say enough, tell enough
I mean they just aren't swell enough

You're much too much, and just too very very
To ever be in Webster's dictionary
And so, I'm borrowing a love song from the birds
To tell you that you're marvelous,
Too marvelous for words.

We heard Charlie "Mocking Bird" Parker do a nice blues, "Parker's Mood." We heard the magic keyboard manipulation of James P. Johnson on "Blue Moods."

One of the few non-jazz numbers I played this morning was a new one from Dylan, "Long and Wasted Years."

It's been such a long, long time
Since we loved each other and our hearts were true
One time, for one brief day, I was the man for you

Last night I heard you talking in your sleep
Saying things you shouldn't say
Oh baby, you just might have to go to jail someday

I wear dark glasses to cover my eyes
There are secrets in them I can't disguise
Come back baby if I ever hurt your feelings I apologize.
