Scruffy

The neighbors have two dogs, whose real names are Smoke and Daisy, but since for a long time I never knew their names, I called them Junior and Scruffy, respectively. I don't know dog breeds, so I can't tell you what type of dogs they are. Junior has the short-legged, elongated body of a daschund, but he's black and white with pointed ears and full of energy. Scruffy is very small, brown, and long-haired. Junior is a puppy; Scruffy, an old dog.

Yesterday night, as we were preparing to eat the spousal unit's delicious cous-cous, there was a rapping on the door. I opened to a student who asked if we were the owners of the small dog that was lying still in the road in front of our house. It was Daisy, AKA Scruffy. We thought she was dead. She had been hit by a car. There was a big stain on the pavement, which I initially took for blood, but was probably urine. Junior was concerned. I picked Scruffy up and moved her to the side of the road, so that she wouldn't be run over again. It turns out, though, that she was still breathing. I brought her into the house and held her in my arms and tried to ease her out of her shock. When the neighbors returned, the spousal unit informed them of what had happened and they came over to get her. I had a bloodstain on the sleeve of my sweatshirt.

Today I see her walking around, albeit gingerly, in the neighbors' driveway. A miracle, perhaps.
