Fathers Day Community Radio

Happy Fathers Day to all you dads and granddads! (I'll omit the apostrophe for the possessive, but I could make a case for it after the "s". I have a hard time accepting it before the "s". Yeah, I have an inner punctuation nerd in me.)

I'll start by sharing something about my own dad. He had this habit of feeding us kids lines of bull, but never saying afterwards, "just kidding." Before knowing how to read I would ask him what the writing on the toothpaste box said. He'd make up some nonsense and leave it at that. Only a year or so later and wiser would I realize that he was taking advantage of my youthful innocence. Or he would say that, when he was in the Navy, he flew over a hurricane, and looked down into the eye, in which there was a ship, and it was so calm, that the sailors were lying on their backs on the deck, their hand hands behind their heads, while the storm swirled around them. My brother was a short-wave radio listener for a spell, and would write away for QSL cards. Then (early 1970s) as now, one of the most ubiquitous stations on the bands was Radio Havana Cuba. So he wrote away for a QSL card, which he received. I remember my dad saying something about getting a call from the FBI about my communist brother ... Only years later did it occur to me that he probably made the whole thing up, and there was no telephone call.

I started out with George Benson, doing "Song for my Father." George Benson can pick. Later I played Fats Waller goofing (as usual) on "Old Grand Dad":

Although he wears glasses
He mixes with the classes
of today (yes, today)
Nice, gentle, and kind
But there's on thing
I'll always keep on my mind

Who's the one that I adore
'though he beats me to the floor?
My old grand dad, my old grand dad
(he's my papppy's pappy)

Sister Rosetta Tharpe wants a tall skinny papa, while Dinah Washington wants her fat daddy back.

I got men who are younger
and more handsome too
But they just don't move me
like you do.

I played a relatively long version of James Brown doing "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag." Maceo was sounding good on the tenor.

We listened to Jelly Roll Morton expound on "Sweet Mamas and Sweet Papas" in New Orleans back in the day, from the Library of Congress sessions of 1938. And keeping on the New Orleans theme, Wynton blowing a tune of that name.

I did a little medley ... I segued from Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly" into Kenny Garrett's cover of the tune on alto sax ... which luckily happens to be done in the same key. I did something similar, going from Sun Ra and Cosmic Ray's "Daddy Gonna Tell You No Lie" into the cover by the Josh Roseman Unit.

Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler goofed on "There'll Be Some Changes Made." Chester:

I'm gonna start wearin' leather and change my routine
I'll wear dark glasses, maybe a toupée
I'll get down and boogie and become risqué
I'll start wearin' makeup like Jackson and Prince
You'll see me ridin' in my Mercedes Benz
Nobody wants you when you just play guitar
There'll be some changes made.

We closed with Anita O'Day, singing Cole Porter's "My Heart Belongs to Daddy."

While tearing off a game of golf
I may make a play for the caddy
But when I do, I don't follow through
My heart belongs to Daddy
