Catamount Community Radio - April 8, 2012

Happy Easter. It snuck up on me this year. It would have been great this past week to have been in Seville to see the processions. As it was, it was Spring Break. I actually had a very productive week, working constantly, but at a very leisurely pace. (Knowing my tendency to be a lazy, good-for-nothing bum) if you would have told me a week ago how much I would accomplish, I wouldn't have believed you. I built my playlist slowly throughout the week.

I only got 29 songs in today. I think that is because I talked a lot. With my usual lucidity and wit, I must modestly add.

We heard some CCR classics, like "Plum Blossom" and "Rock-a-bye Baby with a Dixie Melody."

We heard a couple from Jimmie Rodgers. I quipped that although I don't know a lot about contemporary popular music (the Foo Fighters, do they fight foos, or are they foos who fight?) at least I know who Jimmie Rodgers was. From him, we heard a novelty recording, probably a promo, that he recorded with the Carter Family. We also heard his duet with Louis Armstrong, "Blue Yodel #9." I still sometimes have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea of those two recording together. Of the two, in those days, perhaps it was Rodgers who was the bigger star. But today, everybody knows who Louis Armstrong was, but only the cognoscenti know Jimmie Rodgers.

We listened to a great oldie, "Love Bandit."

Jesse James and Frank James
Billie the Kid and all the rest
I suppose there's been some bad cats
out there in the West
But if those cats could have dug me
and my love bandit ways
They would have hung up their guns
and made it to their graves
because I'm a ... Love Bandit!

I used to jump in my white horse Cadillac
and ride across the borderline
I'd rope fifty-five girls
and kiss them all at the same time
I'd take thirty-five or forty
and load 'em all on a freight
there was a million dollar reward for me
in each and every state.
The sheriffs said, is your name Love Bandit Jones?
and I said in a very deep voice
Yes, brother Sheriff,
and that's your chick on the back of my horse

Wyatt Earp, Matt Dillon, and Cheyenne
If they'd seen me comin' they'd a' all ran
They say I'm the baddest man they ever saw
I'd steal a girl before any of them could draw
With the girl in my arms I'd make my fight
In five seconds, brother, I'm outta sight
If you want your girl keep her by your side
'cause if she flags my white horse
I'll sure let her ride
because I'm a Love Bandit.
