Catamount Community Radio - February 19, 2012

I just finished watching the issue compete in a 5K race. She runs it in around 24 minutes. Way better than I could do. It'll be awhile, though, before she can take me at round-ball.

Blue skies today. So we listened to Harry Connick, Jr. bang the tune out on the 88's. We also listened to him (not fair so much good looks, talent, and charm in one individual) with his big band do "You Didn't Know Me When:"

I rode a roller coaster
From Coney Island to Key West
I held on with one finger
So the other ten could rest
It may be hard to believe
Hard to comprehend
But baby, you didn't know me when

I played third chair trombone
In an out-of-work polka band
We looked for gigs on ships
In countries that had no land
It may be hard to believe
We hit the top ten
But baby, you didn't know me when

If you want a resume I'll put it in writing
It's only good for a day and the contents are frightening

I gave long-winded speeches
I was a head-of-state
I wrote an endless novel
Called See Jane Love And Hate
It may be hard to believe
I'm reticent
But baby, you didn't know me when

So he's got eleven fingers? The day also belonged to Thomas "Fats" Waller. A brilliant pianst A pure piano solo ("I Ain't Got Nobody"). He played "Winter Weather." Duke Ellington had a piece called "Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac," a piece based on the spiritual "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." We listened to Mr. Waller do the latter tune on organ. He loved to play organ, and sometimes would pass the night live on the radio, playing spirituals on the organ, not as the great Fats Waller, but anonymously, just out of his love for the music.

It was a jazz-heavy show today, but all of it accessible. No Albert Ayler or anything like that.

Covers? Joshua Redman doing Stevie Wonder's "Visions," and Larry Goldings doing Wonder's "Big Brother." Ben Allison covered John Lennon's "Jealous Guy."

All this and more. And you won't want your money back, because it's free ... and free form. Free-form radio for Cullowhee and the world, Sunday mornings 10-12 (EST) on WWCU.
