Catamount Community Radio - January 1, 2012

Happy New Year, my friends. Don't knock yourself out trying to comply with your resolutions. I know you won't.

Here I am, back in Carolina. Modern transportation is a tremendous thing. One day you're in snowy Northern Michigan, or in Sunny Spain ... The next day you're home in Carolina, dizzy with displacement.

I wore out those interstates yesterday with my relentless driving. Almost 500 miles worth. Even though it was only a total of four days on the road, I was compelled to play Dave Dudley's "Six Days on the Road."

My brother hipped me to Joseph Spence's version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town." He doesn't know the words, and his guitar is out of tune, but it's nevertheless supremely compelling and charming music. Ry Cooder owes a lot to old Joseph Spence. I played Cooder al duo with Earl Hines, and I could hear the ghost of Joseph Spence in Cooder's playing.

It's the new year, so we heard two versions of "I've Found a New Baby" (Sonny Rollins, Lester Young). New? Ben Webster with "New Style Baby" and Paolo Nutini's "New Shoes." Now, don't go thinking that some new shoes are going to make you feel better.

At the end of the year, there are always lists: the ten best movies, the ten best albums, the ten best songs, the ten best etc. So, in that spirit, I'll give you my top seven albums (subject to change, and in no particular order):

Sly and the Family Stone - There's a Riot Going On
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Miles Davis - Milestones
The Beatles - Revolver
Bela Bartok - String Quartets
Duke Ellington - Blanton / Webster years
Bob Seger - Live Bullet

I played Sly and Van from the list.
