Catamount Community Radio - August 21, 2011

Tomorrow is the first day of classes, so a new year begins. I always approach new semesters with cautious optimism, and always tell myself "this time I'm not going to procrastinate and I'm going to stay organized." Inevitably I procrastinate and my office, while neat and tidy in outward appearance, hides a secret chaos. This semester will be different.

With that in mind, I played some tunes with a school theme: Schoolhouse Rock ...

Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up words and phrases and clauses
In complex sentences like: In the mornings, when I'm usually wide awake, I love to take a walk through the gardens and down by the lake, where I often see a duck and a drake, and I wonder, as I walk by, just what they'd say if they could speak, although I know that's an absurd thought.

Chuck Berry's "School Day":

Soon as three o'clock rolls around
You finally lay your burden down
Close up your books, get out of your seat
Down the halls and into the street
Up to the corner and 'round the bend
Right to the juke joint you go in.

Louis Armstrong doing "You Don't Learn that at School":

Robin Hood was famous
But one thing you should know
He only robbed the rich folks
'cause the poor folks had no dough.
But you don't learn that at school.

We heard a couple numbers with an "end of summer" theme: Michael Jackson's "Farewell my Summer Love," and Alec Wilder's "Footnotes to a Summer Love."

We listened to Toumani Diabate play his kora, first with Songhai and later with his Symmetric Orchestra.

Some classic country: Willie, Ray Price, Johnny Paycheck, Hank Williams (in the guise of "Luke the Drifter"). Apparently for his spoken-word material he used that moniker. According to the experts at Wikipedia, "Fearful that disc jockeys and jukebox operators would hesitate to accept these nontraditional Williams recordings, thereby hurting the marketability of his name, the alias was employed."

On the novelty front, Katie Lee doing "It Must be Something Psychological"

I know you're not my ego ideal
You aren't like my father or brother
But the way I feel does not become
A sister, a pal or a mother
My yearning's really quite explainable
I want you 'cause you're unattainable
Just let me get my hands on you
And then I want somebody new
With me it's psychological.
