Dandy Community Radio - July 17, 2011

The screeching tires were a propos today. I left on my bicycle for the station at 9:45, and made it in the nick of time.

Every year on July 17 Jim Dandy celebrates his 18th birthday, so I thought that today I would pay a small tribute to him, so I played Benny Goodman doing "Fine and Dandy," which has the added bonus of an accordion solo; I played the song from which he probably took his nickname: "Jim Dandy"

Jim Dandy had a submarine
Got a message from a mermaid queen
She was hanging from a fishing line
Jim Dandy didn't waste no time
Jim Dandy to the rescue
Go, Jim Dandy
Go, Jim Dandy

Jim Dandy wanted to go to Maine
Got a ticket on a DC plane
Jim Dandy didn't need no suit
He was hip and ready to boot
Jim Dandy to the rescue
Go, Jim Dandy
Go, Jim Dandy

I like the bit about the submarine; quite an inspired bit of song-writing. I would guess that Jim was more familiar with the Black Oak Arkansas version of the tune than with the Lavern Baker joint that I played today.

So I played in the same set Dandy Livingstone, the Dandy Warhols, and Nortec Collective's "Dandy del sur." Happy Dandy, Jimmy Birthday!

I played Hank Williams' "Long Gone Lonesome Blues," in which he yodels like you wouldn't believe. Somebody must have studied the influence of Jimmie Rodgers on Hank Williams. How many kids today even know who Jimmie Rodgers was? Punk ass kids. (My inner old fart coming out.) Did you ever notice that Hank Williams bobbed when he sang? Check out some old Hank Williams videos.

In July the Jamaicans arrive on campus, so with that in mind I played significant quantities of Jamaican music. Bob Marley and the Wailers ... Bunny Wailer ... I think it was Bunny Wailer who sang those sublime falsetto harmonies on those early seventies records that I like so much (moi ... I like the Bob Marley music that came before his classic, late period, not that I don't dig the later stuff too).

I continued the accordion theme from last week ... Clifton Chenier letting les bons temps roulet. Carmen McRae accompanied by an accordionist on "You Took Advantage of Me." And then "Joseph, Joseph" by Jo Privat, oh yeah: acordeón por un tubo.

Banjo or accordion? More of both, plus yodeling, in my humble opinion (and more pedal steel guitar wouldn't be bad either) ... Is there a song out there with banjo, accordion, pedal steel ... and yodeling? I doubt it somehow. It's all guitars and keyboards, and the occasional saxophone. Hmm... those are the instruments that I more or less play.

So, Banjo player Steve Martin played his "The Crow." So I thought I would continue the bird theme and listen to "The Chicken," a Pee Wee Ellis number he did with the James Brown band. Should have continued with Charlie Parker ... Speaking of mocking birds, there was a mocking bird outside my office window a half an hour ago, mocking me.

I'll be up in Michigan next week, so they'll be no show, but I'll be back for the last Sunday of July. Catamount Community Radio, almost every Sunday 10-12 (East Coast) on WWCU-FM.
