Catamount Community Radio - May 22, 2011

I have nothing to say about the rapture except that it provided good fodder for a lot of jokes. How did the thing get such traction in the media? Is the internet really that powerful? You know in your heart of hearts that Harold Camping, or whatever his name is, never really believed ... Ya think?

Today, we listened to Mel Tormé sing a few. We also heard TV theme songs: The Odd Couple, MASH, Sanford and Son. Some the original versions, some covers.

We heard Joe Henderson: "Miles Ahead," and also as a guest on Kenny Dorham's "If I Would Ever Leave You." I'm wondering if he was also the sax player on Grant Green's "Bossa."

Two by Merle Travis. He was a Kentuckian who was probably more famous for his finger-picking guitar style than for his songs (which were often about coal mining and the way that coal miners were taken advantage of ... like "Sixteen Tons"). He played "I'll See You in my Dreams." I think it's time for me to learn that tune for myself.

We listened to a norteña tune: Joan Sebastián's "Mayra" and I followed up with the cumbia remix of "Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" (either a clever critique of consumerist capitalism or pure silliness).

Katie Lee has the will to fail:

I have talents that I never use.
I try to win but I love to lose
because I've got the will to fail

[...]

I secretly am enjoying myself
but slowly I'm destroying myself.

On a whim I broke out "Telegram Sam" by T. Rex:

Bobby's alright, Bobby's alright.
He's a natural born poet, he's just outta sight.
Automatic shoes, automatic shoes.
Give me 3D-vision and the California Blues.
And me I funk but I don't care.
I ain't no square with my corkscrew hair.

Thanks to Mr. T for some radio fodder.
