Catamount Community Radio Radio - January 16, 2011

Sun is shining; ice is melting. Or as George Harrison might say, "I see the ice is slowly melting
Little darling / It seems like years since it's been clear." Not like that's the whole truth; we've had some sunshine, but it is certain that the ice is slowly melting.

Billie Holiday:

Honestly, I'm glad it's snowing
It helps to keep our friends from knowing
When they ask me why I'm sad
It's easy to blame the weather.

More tenor titans this week: Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, and Sonny Stitt (even though we heard him today on alto). Add that to last week's crew (Joshua Redman, Yusef Lateef, Lester Young, Dexter Gordon), and you have considerable firepower.

I did a little Monk set: Monk playing "Introspection," then Wynton's interesting arrangement of "Monk's Mood," followed by Ben Riley and his group doing "Nutty."

We heard some heavyweight "female vocalists." (Somehow, it just seems appropriate to put that in quotation marks.) Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Betty Carter.

Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay) did his "I Am the Greatest." I wonder if he was the first athlete to habitually refer to himself in the third person.

Some hip hop with Mos Def and Mystikal. Frame it with Allen Toussaint, and you have another show in the can.
