Catamount Community Radio - May 16, 2010

I framed the show with Jason Moran's "Arizona Landscape," not in reference to the state's new laws, but rather simply because I like it, and because it has a certain je-ne-sais-quoi quality that I like at the beginning and the end of the show.

Sarah Vaughan sang "Slow Hot Wind," which always brings to mind .... nevermind.

We listened to a couple by one of Don Cherry's projects, Codona. I remember seeing him play with Multikulti in Chapel Hill.

I played John Lee Hooker doing "Back Biters and Syndicators," and I'm wondering what he means by syndicator. I'm thinking it's a slangy way of saying "sinner," but maybe he means it more literally, as like somebody who's making deals. A quick interstate search yielded no good information.

I did resolve one enigma: who wrote the tune "You Never Told Me that You Care"? Listening to it, I thought: Charles Mingus. It turns out it was Sun Ra. How about that?

John Hartman did an old one, "Where the Old Red River Flows." He cleverly changed the lyric, omitting a racially insensitive term ("darkies"), substituting "hippies." I found it over at Groover's Paradise:

You can hear the hippies singing soft and low ...

Janis Ian's "At Seventeen" was a pretty blast from the past, and a melancholy song.

I had a good time spinning discs for my listener. Catamount Free Form Community Radio, on WWCUFM, Sunday mornings 10-12, Eastern Coastal time.
