The Last Day of Class

is always slightly sad. You've spent more than three months teaching, entertaining, boring, trying to charm, cajoling, being exasperated by ... a group of students. You're like their surrogate dad. You're proud of their small successes, but you're annoyed by their tendency to sneak peaks at their cell phones, even text, in class. But it feels good when they laugh at your jokes. Some are gregarious, others are shy, but you like them all. And then suddenly they are gone. Not only that, they're happy to be gone. They can't wait to be gone.
