Catamount Community Radio - April 11, 2010

I used to be a night owl. I dug staying up till 4:00 a.m. and sleeping till the crack of noon. But the times they are a changin'. I played high school football for the last time in 1980. That was thirty years ago. Thirty years from now, if I'm still walking Planet Earth, I'll be 77 years old. This is the sort of thought I have early in the morning about 7:15, while trying to get back to sleep for another half hour. So eventually I decide to just get up, do a few menial tasks, a puzzle, drink some coffee, make my lunch (sorry, Subway), until it's time to head for the radio station.

I played Allen Toussaint (twice, in fact). Patrick heard it, and decided to give me a call to tell me that Toussaint would be playing live in Asheville on the fifteenth. Damn!! I'll be out of town, in Kentucky, that day, so I gotta miss Allen Toussaint? It just ain't fair. (The spell check on livejournal doesn't accept "ain't"? ... Well, they don't accept "livejournal" either... heh heh)

I think the highlight of today's show was when Sonny Rollins played "Toot, Toot, Tootsie, Good-bye" What a guy, coming up with such quirky oldies as this one. Gotta be from the twenties. Yes?

This weekend was the jazz festival, with guests John Ellis and Jason Marsalis in town. These guys can play! But still, after listening to so much jazz, I wanted to mix it up today. What else is new.

I have to announce that I got a new (at least to me) piano yesterday. I liked my old one, a Cable built in Chicago probably in the twenties, but it was so old that it just wouldn't stay in tune. Now I have a sleek, relatively new Samick. Sounds nice, but believe it or not the "action" of the keys is actually better on the Cable. But still, a step up in the piano world. Thanks to Seamus, Ricardo, Andrew for the elbow grease to get the old one into the garage and the new one into its space. Them pianos, they some heavy sombitches.

Toot, toot, tootsie, tune in some fine Sunday morning to Catamount Community Radio, on WWCU-FM; it airs from 10-12, Carolina time.
