The Birds

He was just trying to get a good night's sleep, but with all the racket those birds made in the morning it was impossible. He couldn't stand it, he just wished the birds would go away and leave him in peace. He wasn't about to drown it out with the white noise of a fan. He couldn't stand white noise, it induced anxiety.

Early one morning he awoke to hear something strange: the absence of birds. The silence, as they say, was deafening. He discovered, to his own astonishment, that he couldn't get back to sleep without the accompaniment of bird sounds.

The chirping and squawking of the birds the next morning was somehow reassuring, even the "haw haw haw" of the crow sounded good. He fell back asleep wondering what the birds were saying: "hey hey hey hey!," "chip, chip, chip, chipperrrr!," "how, how, how now brown cow!" Zzzzzzzzz.

And then the neighbors started up the lawnmower.
