Catamount Community Radio - February 21, 2010

I put off the Detroit special one more week. I have my playlist, but my notes are not yet ready.

Somehow, one of the CD envelopes was empty. I must have inadvertently left it in the computer yesterday, so I didn't have as much material to work with today as I usually have. Luckily, I had grabbed a couple CDs from the shelf, so I had enough music for two hours. But you'll notice that I played only 28 songs, while I usually play 32 or 33. That's because I did a lot of talking.

With all the Detroit music I've been listening to lately, I guess it was inevitable that I played a bunch of it this good morning: Tommy Flanagan, John Lee Hooker, Freda Payne, Bob Seger, The Stooges.

For the third consecutive week, I played Ray Charles doing "Undecided." Just yesterday I realized that the tune is so familiar because, back in the day, I used to listen to it on my favorite Django Reinhardt record. Yeah, "come up to my apartment, we'll listen to some Django Reinhardt records and I'll show you my etchings." (laughter)

We listened to Steven Bernstein and Sam Rivers play one. Here are the liner notes (quotes from Abraham Idelsohn) from the album:

"The Jew demanded that the chazzan, through his music, make him forget his actual life, and that he elevate him on the wings of his tunes into a fantastical paradisiacal world.

"The main basis of Semitic and Jewish music is the minor scale which, at a very late date, came to be considered of a melancholy character by the Anglo-Saxon only."

When I read the quotation, I got hung up on the word "paradisiacal." Couldn't get the damn thing out of my mouth.
