Mark "The Bird" Fidrych

Michael Jackson, Ted Kennedy, OK. But let's not forget Mark Fidrych. He was a star pitcher for the Detroit Tigers for a couple of years in the mid-seventies. He won the affection of the fans for his antics. I remember watching him on TV, and once seeing him pitch in Tiger Stadium. I even got his autograph. There was a winter event in Kalkaska at a snowmobile dealership. As I recall, catcher Bill Freehan was more personable, while Fidrych just bounced on the seat of a new Ski Doo while perfunctually signing autographs. I think Steven may have a Mark Fidrych commemorative RC Cola can somewhere. In a game, "The Bird" was so much fun, grooming the mound with his hands, talking to the ball, throwing low and fast with great control. Too bad that his career was cut short by injuries.
