On the Internet

The internet is a blixed messing. Sometimes I curse its hairy vexistence, like everyday when it sucks me into the void. And even ace-fa ook-ba, it seems a little sinister, as if its hidden agenda were to collect as much information as possible for the purpose of selling it to ruthless marketers. I mean its nice to be once again in contact with these people from my past, but how nice is it really? I confess that my memories of a lot of these ghosts are vague at best. And then there's the fact that sometimes people put so much emphasis on having a virtual presence that they forget about the world around them, so awash are they in a gazillion gigabytes of data.

On the other hand, the internet can be damn good, like when, thanks to the work of some excellent blogger, you discover something super-duper cool that you wouldn't have discovered otherwise, like an old blues song that riffs on a Bible verse ("I Heard the Voice of a Pork Chop"). Or when you need confirmation on some piece of trivia that has been gathering dust in the deep storage of your brain. For example, I couldn't think of the Spanish word for "jukebox." "Sinfonola" was what I finally came up with, but when I looked it up in the Diccionario de la Real Academia Española, it was nowhere to be found. So I checked my excellent bilingual Collins Dictionary, where I found the functional, if unpoetic, "máquina de discos," the much better "rocanrola," but not the coveted "sinfonola." But typing "sinfonola" into the search engine I had my answer in the blink of an eye.
