Pittsburgh

Travel to Pittsburgh yesterday was uneventful. I listened to my ipod, did a crossword puzzle, drank a seven-dollar glass of white wine. It was after nine before I finally got to my hotel. I went walking in downtown Pittsburgh, in search of something to eat. I settled on a joint called "Parma Pizza" which looked sufficiently greasy. It was being run either by Turks or Lebanese, I'm kinda leaning toward Turks. The "Hoagie" that they served me was pretty good. I call that sort of sandwich a "sub," but I remember in East Lansing, MI, there was a place called Bells which served "grinders," more or less the same thing. After my sandwich was ready, I stopped in at a 7-11, thinking about buying a bottle of beer, but the dude at the counter informed me that convenience stores can't sell beer in Pennsylvania. He said, find a bar, they'll sell you a six pack. I thought, naw, not worth the hassle, I'll just wash it down with water, which is what I did, a pity.

I worked on my paper all morning today, and, in all modesty, I think it's pretty good. I write about a story one of whose characters is based on Charlie Parker. So, after finishing my editing, I went walking again. Half the people on the streets today are wearing their Steelers jerseys. It's too much! Must be a dress-down Friday thing.

I found a wine store, and bought a bottle of red from France, then a gyro sandwich from a street vendor (ain't cities great?). I had a little feast in my hotel room. I'm not sure what I'll do this afternoon and evening, but it will surely involve strolling the streets of downtown Pittsburgh.
