Jerry Reed, 1937-2008

Most people, if they know Jerry Reed at all, know him from the movie "Smokey & the Bandit." Well, I never saw the movie, so I know him principally as the guy who sang "Amos Moses." A couple years ago, I thought about Jerry Reed for the first time in a long time: "Jerry Reed. Hmm. I wonder when he died." So I googled him, and found out he hadn't died, that he was still alive! I think I was mixing him up with Roger Miller, who had a similar voice and a similar sense of humor. Anyway, Jerry Reed was a hell of guitar picker, and he was funny too. He died of complications from emphysema ... which makes me think of another of his songs, "Another puff." He had some great duets with Chet Atkins, but I think my favorite Jerry Reed song is about automobiles, "Lord, Mr. Ford." In the video from the Porter Wagoner show, I get a kick out of it when he tells the guitarist from the house band, "I'm 'onna pick; quit out-loudin' me."
