mcouture, language policeman, reporting for duty

Hey kids, here are the words and expressions that are bothering me.

• To “throw under the bus.” I, for one, am tired of people being “thrown under the bus.” Let’s throw them under a train, or a taxi, or a covered wagon.

• “In harm’s way.” Here comes harm! Get out of the way! Otherwise you might lose a limb, be killed, suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome, depression or suicide. So remember, stay out of “harm’s way.”

• Listening to a recent NPR story about the euthanasia of Eight Belles immediately following the Kentucky Derby, the vet who was being interviewed kept speaking of horse racing as an “industry.” Let me keep my illusions. I was hoping it was a sport or something.

• Developers. The guys who cut down trees and put up fancy houses. Land is not developed so much as it is “exploited.” Isn’t that the word? To say that it is developed is to imply that there was something lacking before, like a "gated community" (hmmm) or a new Hooters franchise.
