Strings in Rock Music

Reading the M for Musicology blog, I ran across this clip of Canadian Owen Pallet a.k.a. Final Fantasy doing a thing with his violin, sampled loops and voice.

The riff reminds me of The Tom Tom Club's Genius of Love from back in the early eighties. This sort of looping is pretty common now. I saw Michael Lowenstern do something similar, except with bass clarinet instead of violin.

Phil Ford's topic over at M for Musicology was the use of strings in rock music. My comment is that the best use of strings in rock is this tune by Serge Gainsbourg, "Ballade de Melody Nelson." I love the contrast between the heavy Rickenbacker bass and the strings.
