1. There's been an interesting thread on Adrain Belew's blog about the merits of learning to read music. Years ago, Frank Zappa told Adrian that it probably wasn't worth his time. For the record, I think it's worth it. I had better, since I'm spending so much time doing it (but from a piano/saxophone perspective). Guitarists are notoriously bad readers (insert joke here: how do you get a guitar player to stop playing? put a piece of music in front of him). One of Adrian's commentators supplied this link:


2. A great document ... what in jazz would be called a cutting contest, but a hip hop version, from back in 1989. The video quality is poor, but these guys are sick. Thanks to cocaine blunts.

Video Rings True!

And I remember before tablature, I had many books that had those diagrams with the dots. Except they had way too many dots for one hand. I called them Beatle chords. And I actually believed they were the chords that the Beatles were using. Very discouraging at the time, and now years later knowing there are easier ways to play. No wonder I stuck close to Wild Thing and I'm Eighteen. haha (if I only knew about Drop D tuning back then.)
