Catamount Community Radio - August 21 & 28, 2016

I never did get around to finishing last week's blog entry, so I'll bundle the two entries.

I bought a pair of new basketball sneakers yesterday, and I'm planning on hitting the court after I leave the office today. Let's pray that I don't have a heart attack. Worrying more about that than about bricking my shots.

David Bowie, "Everyone Says Hi"

Said you'd took a big trip
They said you moved away
Happened oh so quietly, they say
Should've took a picture
Something I could keep
Buy a little frame, something cheap
For you
Everyone says hi
Said you sailed a big ship
Said you sailed away
Didn't know the right thing to say
I'd love to get a letter
Like to know what's what
Hope the weather's good and it's not too hot
For you
Everyone says hi
Everyone says hi
Everyone says
Don't stay in a sad place
Where they don't care how you are
Everyone says hi

Dizzy and the Sonnys, "On the Sunny Side of the Street." With both Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt in the band, both sides of the street are "sonny." I think this cut is an example of how ego can be a positive thing at times. Each Sonny wanted to cut the other one, resulting in some tenor saxophone pyrotechnics.

Patrick told me his son Derek liked the sound of the "Japanese electronica" that is sampled on the promo for my show. I couldn't do it earlier, because when my computer was "refreshed" this summer, I lost all the tunes that I had downloaded from CDs. I have shelves full of CDs, and that Hosono / Sakamoto CD was somewhere, but I didn't know where. I sat down yesterday and went through them all. Found it and played "Micro Talk" for Derek.

A couple from the great Yusef Lateef.
