Catamount Community Radio - April 19, 2015

I don't know why, but I was up this morning before the birds started chirping. The rain hadn't started yet, there were no cars going by and all was quiet. Soon enough the birds were chirping and burping and eating dirty earth worms. I can imagine if you really want to sleep through the morning, you might categorize the birds as jerkoffs and douchebags, but personally I like to lie there imagining what words they are repeating.

It's a rainy day again. I walked Roscoe three times in the rain this week, and it looks like that number is going to go up to four. I don't mind. I may need a nap first, though. Rainy days and Sundays don't get me down... they're perfect for curling up on the couch with a cup of joe and the radio tuned to 90.5.

Back in 1934, Arthur Schwartz wrote a tune, to which Howard Dietz added lyrics, for a musical that has long been forgotten. But the tune lives on as a jazz standard: "You and the Night and the Music." We listened to several versions today.

You and the night and the music
Thrill me but will we be one
After the night and the music are done?
Until the pale light of dawn and in daylight
Hearts will be throbbing guitars
Morning will come without warning and take away the stars

Percy Sledge died last week, so I played the tune that Tyler says is his favorite, "The Dark End of the Street."

Jim Dandy ties with Nick and Gaby to win this week's cover contest, edging out Donna and last week's winner, Mary Ellen.

1. Raymond Scott Quintet base a tune on the melody of a famous opera, which one? Bizet's "Carmen" ("The Quintet Plays Carmen") Charlie Parker would occasionally quote this theme in his solos.

2. We heard this novelty record, hating on hippies, Don Bowan's "The San Francisco Scene." The question is, what is the tune underneath? - "Wabash Cannonball" (an American folk song that goes back at least to the 1880s)

3. What's the tune, who wrote it, and who is playing it? - "Still Crazy After All these Years," Paul Simon, and Brad Mildew ... Mehldau.

4. What tune is Javon Jackson playing? - Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry About a Thing.
