Catamount Community Radio - November 2, 2014

It seems to be warming up today, but yesterday was pretty cold, and the day before there was snow at the higher elevations. I have a tendency to moan and groan about the hot weather, so I'm just going to put on my long johns and a sweater and enjoy it while it lasts. I was riding my bicycle past all the tailgaters yesterday, when a woman stopped me and asked, "Would you like a bowl of low country boil? We made fifteen gallons." "What's that?" I asked. It turned out to be a soup of onions, smoked sausage, shrimp, corn and potatoes. Pretty good. I could make that. Easy. It was good. I stood there eating it chatting with two cops, who were also getting their free bowls.

I haven't yet reset my alarm clock. I never use the alarm anyway, for I generally don't oversleep because I'm not sleep-deprived. I just looked at the clock this morning and subtracted an hour. Knowing me, it will be two weeks before I change the time on my alarm clocks. As a kid, we probably could't even conceive of cell phones and personal computers, much less cell phones and computers whose time settings change automatically.

I played a few tunes by Matt Wilson, plus some Jack Bruce that had hardly anything to do with Cream. Kinda avant-gardish stuff from 1970 with guitarist John McLaughlin. Bruce died a week or so ago at 71. He considered himself a jazz musician, but others considered him one of the great rock bassists.

Jim Dandy wins the cover contest with three of four.

1. Lee "Scratch" Perry is covering "Tell me Something Good." Whose tune is it? - Chaka Khan and Rufus.

2. Nick Lowe is covering "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road." With whom is the tune usually associated? - Elvis Presley

3. Jazz Against the Machine is covering a tune. What's the title and whose tune is it? - "Spoonman," by Soundgarden. The song has a 7/4 figure. When the band was asked about it, they said they didn't do it intentionally.

4. Marlin Wasilewski did a piano trio version of a tune. What's the title and whose tune is it? - "Diamonds and Pearls," by Prince.

Good Timing

My power went off at 12:01
I was just about to press send on my email. Thinking I might lose my words, I copied and pasted them to a notepad and shut down my laptop that was still on battery power.
After awhile realizing that the power was not coming right back, I remembered that I had a generator for just such emergencies.
I figured it would be a nice test of my emergency email broadcasting system.
It worked out well. My power never returned until Monday night. But now I know how to act quickly if the power ever goes off before your show ends, because missing your show would suck the most!!!

Re: Good Timing

Your the best listener a radio dude could ever hope to have.
