Catamount Community Radio - March 16, 2014

Back on the air after four Sundays off the air. It was a little strange but good. I was at the Unknown Hinson show last night, and didn't make it home until around two in the morning. But I made it in this morning without a problem. Since it's raining I drove. Damn near ran over a squirrel. I hit the brakes hard and fortunately the little moth•%fu%$@r turned around and thus was saved from seemingly certain doom.

One day Tyler wrote on FB: "Not many people talk about you, Ike Quebec, but you're still one of my guys..." That inspired me to play a few of his tunes today. One ballad, one Latin-tinged number, and one swinger.

Also featured a few catchy Congolese rumba numbers. So catchy that I believe I caught them. That guitar interplay is simply infectious. All three from back in the day: 50s and 60s.

We heard Detroit trumpeter Marcus Belgrave play one. From the Detroit Free Press:

Marcus Belgrave’s custom-made trumpet, which was stolen from the trunk of his car on Friday night in Eastern Market in Detroit, was recovered at Zeidman’s pawnshop, a few blocks east of the market area. The trumpeter picked up the horn at the downtown police station this afternoon, blowing a few choruses of “Oh Happy Day” for the assembled media as his wife, Joan, sang along. 'I’m smiling from ear to ear,” the 77-year-old Belgrave said later.' And in a sweet coda to the story, Belgrave didn’t even have to pay the $350 it might cost to get the horn out of hock. The law states that unless the police can prove a pawnshop knew an item was stolen when they bought it — which is typically hard to do — the victim in the case has to buy it back. But sometimes pawnshops agree to waive the costs, and that’s what happened here. 'I think they were happy to get rid of it,' Belgrave said.

During my hiatus from the radio station, the great flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía died. We listened to him accompany Camarón de la Isla on number.

Cover contest winner Jim Dandy still has 25 feet of snow on his picnic table, even as the daffodils are blooming in North Carolina.
