Je (ne) suis (pas) québecois

I'm sure Québec is full of Coutures, but I'm not one of them. Once upon a time, some Couture left Québec for Michigan, and that I'm part of that line.

While I'm a student of French (my French is horrible, but functional), I'm more familiar with France than I am with Québec. I always thought, though, that if I could be fluent in French, it would be cool to speak with a québecois accent.

Every year or so, I read a book in French, just to sort of charge my batteries a little bit. The last one I read was hilarious, Salut, Galameau! by a québecois, Jacques Godbout. About a guy who has a hot dog wagon and thinks a lot about things. I assume it would have been an even better read had I been able to grasp all the nuances.

Anyway, The first video is an ad for Molson beer, which highlights the difference between us and our neighbors to the north.

The next one is for an English-language radio station in Québec, which parodies the Molson ad.

True Story

A few years I ago was in Quebec City and I noticed that their license plates had the motto, Je Me Souviens.
I asked a traffic cop what it meant, and she said, "I don't remember."
It took me a few years to get joke. haha
A beautiful city. All of the street signs, and menues, etc... are in French also. I vowed to learn some French before I ever returned!
A tout a l'heure
