Five Shows in Five Days (1)

Artist: Unknown Hinson
Date: October 4, 2013
Venue: The Grey Eagle, Asheville, NC

In case you didn’t know already, “Unknown Hinson” is a character, a caricature perhaps: the Country-Western Troubadour with the chart-toppin’ hits, the chart-toppin hair, and the chart-toppin’ teeth (or lack thereof). He's an over-the-top, party likker-lovin’, male chauvinist, mispronouncing phenomenon. He does all his shows in character, talking about “wormens,” “winders,” and “tostesterone.” "You can sing along if you want to, just not too loud." The man who plays him, guitar slinger extraordinaire and voice talent Stuart Baker, never leaves character during the shows, and makes a point to stick around afterwards to meet anybody who cares to stay, sign anything that you want signed, including your “worman’s breast” (I have evidence). While it all seems to be a fun, gimmicky novelty, the truth is the man can play some country and rock guitar. He always introduces his solos by saying, "Gonna pick one." His shredding prowess comes out more live than it does on his records.

He didn’t disappoint this evening. He played old favorites like, “Your Man is Gay,” “Alkyhol Withdrawal,” “Hippie Girl,” “Poly-Urethane,” “Fish Camp Woman,” plus a few numbers from his new album. He always covers a Hendrix tune, usually "Voodoo Chile," “Manic Depression” or “Little ‘Wang.’” This time he played "Manic Depression."

I’m glad he’s back on the road.
