Beauty and Foolishness

1. Ugly Beauty

Spanish has a popular saying: "El hombre es como el oso, cuanto más feo, más hermoso." Literally, "Man is like the bear, the uglier he is, the more beautiful he is."

There is some disagreement about what this actually means, but I think it is a contrast between ugliness on the outside and internal beauty. I looked at myself in the mirror this morning and thought to myself, "I'm ugly."

While in the shower I started reciting the Spanish refrain to myself and then thinking about a Monk tune, "Ugly Beauty." By the way, this the only tune he wrote in waltz time. Since the tune has no lyrics (to my knowledge) we really don't know he meant by it. I like to think that he means that there is a certain ugliness in true beauty and that to appreciate beauty we have understand too ugliness. Monk's music is jagged, angular, sometimes dissonant, but also beautiful.

2. Foolishness

My French nephew got in trouble in school. He was cleaning his glasses when the history teacher got angry and accused him of talking in class. He doesn't quite understand how cleaning his glasses is the equivalent of talking in class.

The following dialogue took place.

Prof : Tu me prends pour un fou?
Moi : C'est possible.

Teacher: Do you take me for a fool?
Me: It's possible.
