Greetings from Mancelona, MI (3)

Well, the Winter Wonderland has turned into a gray, drab mess. But it has to be that way: how can you appreciate the crystaline beauty of snow without knowledge of the ugly beauty of slush, mud, and overcast, rainy skies? The amount of snow that has melted in the last 24 hours is considerable.

Last night I went to Mary Beth's house for dinner. The fire was crackling on the flat screen TV as we ate, drank, and laughed.

After supper Kenny T and I picked some guitar and sang some songs. Kenny has an amazing voice. You need to witness how it fills a room to understand its power.

Today we'll start the drive back down south. We'll stop in Mt. Pleasant, Lansing, and then spend the night somewhere in Ohio. I'll let my daughter have domain over the clicker tonight in the hotel, so she can watch whatever inane New Years Celebration she likes. By tomorrow evening we should be back in Carolina.

I finished A Catcher in the Rye last night. Quite a bender old Holden has for himself in New York those last couple days. One thing about old Holden, he can't stand the phonies. Or the movies! Hey Jim, I found the line: "Goddaam money. It always ends up making you blue as hell."

We'll hit the road as soon as we can get our act together.

Happy New Year!
