Catamount Community Radio - November 7, 2010

So guess which fool got up an hour earlier than he needed to. I'll give you a hint: he has a radio show on Sunday mornings. It was 8:40 and I was on my bike, ready to set off, when suddenly I remembered: Daylight Savings Time ends today.

Today's theme was "haunted melodies," a term I take from a Rahsaan Roland Kirk tune. I don't mean eerie music, as if for the soundtrack of a horror movie. I simply mean music whose melodies have a strange beauty. Perfect examples are Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman," Dewey Redman's "Joie de vivre," and Arthur Blythe's "Spirits in the Field."

I mixed up the haunted melodies with other stuff: big band tunes, straight jazz, doo-wop, reggae; you know, the usual.

I see in the New Yorker there's a long feature on Elvis Costello. I read the first few pages, and I'll eventually finish it. So, I played a couple of Costello's tunes, "Allison" and "Clown Strike." (I once had a crush on a girl named Allison, but the song I associate with that summer is "Every Breath You Take" by the Police).

In other CCR news, it looks like I'll be featured in The Reporter, a newsletter for WCU faculty and staff. I'll pose for a picture at the board on Tuesday, and I'll be interviewed sometime during the week.

Boo-tiful

What? No Leonard Cohen?
That dude haunts me!

Re: Boo-tiful

You're right. He's pretty haunting. And pretty cool too. I just had my mind set on melodies rather than lyrics, so I settled, without really thinking about it, on instrumentals.

Re: Boo-tiful

that's ok. I was just razzing ya because I had a Leonard Cohen DVD playing as I was reading your blog, so he was on my mind. (not like I listen to your show anyway. lol)
