Yowza!

Sometimes the confluence of events leads one to a bloggable topic. For example, I see over on Facebook a one-word comment by Jim Dandy: "Yowza!" A few weeks ago, as I was lifting a heavy basket full of groceries to be scanned by the check-out woman, I said, for no reason at all, "Yowza!" The lady said she hadn't heard that in awhile, and asked where it was from. I said I had no idea.

Google to the rescue. I'm taken to this cat's blog (not a cat, I mean that figuratively) called Jürgen Fauth's Muckworld. Oddly, "Muck" was one of my nicknames back in high school.

Here I learn that the phrase was probably a corruption of "yes, sir." Bandleader Ben Bernie used it as a catch phrase way back in the 1920s. It was later picked by Looney Toons, Chic, and even Frank Zappa. It was also used in the 1969 film, "They Shoot Horses, Don't They."

Isn't that good to know?

In other news, Leonard Skinner, the Florida gym teacher who back in the sixties reported some young rock and roll musicians to the principal for wearing their hair too long, is dead at 77.

They shoot gym teachers, don't they?

Yowza, yowza, yowza!
This was a fun little history lesson. Thanks, Muck!
Those who can't teach...teach gym.
